Acupuncture in Exeter
Acupuncture was the foundation of my practice and it still holds a central place in the work I do. Over time, my practice has grown from this foundation, bringing together traditional Chinese medicine with a modern understanding of health, physiology and the nervous system.
I offer acupuncture as a treatment in its own right, or alongside other approaches where they may be helpful. Every treatment begins with understanding you as an individual — your symptoms, your health, your experiences and the different factors that may be influencing how you feel.
My aim is to create treatment that responds to the whole picture, rather than simply focusing on the symptom that has brought you through the door. Sometimes that means acupuncture alone; sometimes other treatments, practical guidance or a different perspective can form part of the work we do together.
How I use acupuncture
Acupuncture can be helpful for a wide range of physical and emotional health concerns. I use it as part of a wider understanding of your health, taking into account your symptoms, health history and the different factors that may be influencing how you feel.
Your treatment is individual to you. Even when two people come to me with a similar concern, their treatment may look quite different depending on what is happening for them as a whole. I draw on my knowledge of Chinese medicine alongside a modern understanding of health, physiology and the nervous system to shape treatment around your needs.
Acupuncture can be used on its own, or alongside other treatments and practical guidance where appropriate.

What Is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a treatment rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, where fine, sterile needles are inserted at specific points on the body. It has been practised for thousands of years and is now used alongside conventional healthcare in many parts of the world.
Within Chinese medicine, acupuncture is based on an understanding of qi, the body's interconnected systems and the patterns that can develop when health is disrupted. Modern research has also explored acupuncture's effects on the nervous system, pain processing and other physiological processes.
I draw on both perspectives in my practice. My training in Chinese medicine gives me a traditional framework for understanding your health, while my broader knowledge of physiology and the nervous system helps me bring a modern perspective to your treatment.

How Does Acupuncture Work?
From a Chinese medicine perspective, acupuncture works by influencing the flow of qi through the body and supporting the body's natural processes of regulation and recovery. The points used in treatment are selected according to your individual pattern of symptoms and health, rather than simply treating the area where you feel a problem.
There is also growing research into how acupuncture interacts with the nervous system and other physiological processes involved in pain, stress and regulation. While there is still much to understand, these perspectives can help us explore why acupuncture may be useful for such a wide range of concerns.
In my practice, I use both perspectives when deciding how to approach your treatment — combining the traditional framework of Chinese medicine with a modern understanding of the body and nervous system.
