TuiNa

What can Tuina help with?

Tuina can be used for a wide range of concerns, from muscular and joint problems to some of the wider health issues that are commonly addressed within Chinese medicine.

People may seek Tuina for:

  • neck and shoulder tension

  • back pain, stiffness and sciatica

  • muscular aches and tension

  • joint stiffness and restricted movement

  • headaches and migraines

  • stress and tension

  • sleep difficulties

  • digestive problems, including constipation and IBS

  • menstrual and premenstrual symptoms

  • general fatigue and low energy

For some people, Tuina is an alternative to acupuncture when they would prefer not to have needles. It can also be used alongside acupuncture or other Chinese medicine techniques where appropriate.

The way I use Tuina depends on your symptoms and the wider picture of your health, rather than treating a particular condition in isolation.

What does Tuina feel like?

Tuina is a hands-on treatment, and the techniques can vary depending on what you need. I may use pressure, kneading, rolling, stretching, pushing or other techniques to work with particular muscles, acupuncture points and areas of tension or restriction.

You may experience firm or gentle pressure, massage-like movements, stretching or movement of the joints, or techniques such as shaking or vibrating the arms and legs. Some areas may feel more sensitive than others, particularly where there is tension or discomfort.

I'll adapt the pressure and techniques throughout the treatment according to how you respond, and I'll explain what I'm doing as we go.

Tuina (pronounced “twee-nah”) is a form of Chinese massage that I use particularly for muscular tension, stiffness, pain and areas of restricted movement.

It combines hands-on techniques such as pressure, kneading, rolling and stretching with an understanding of the body's acupuncture points and meridians. Treatment can be focused on a particular area or incorporated into a wider Chinese medicine treatment.

I work with Tuina in a practical, targeted way, adapting the techniques to what is happening for you rather than following a fixed massage routine. It can be used on its own or alongside acupuncture and other Chinese medicine techniques where appropriate.
